Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine. This post would be suitable for someone on the Specialist Register, or within 6 months of CCT, with subspecialty training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine. The successful applicant would join a team of three consultants in the Paediatric Emergency Department of Hull Royal Infirmary.

The Emergency Department is situated at Hull Royal Infirmary. It has an integral but autonomous Paediatric Emergency Medicine Department open 24/7.The ED in Hull is an accredited major trauma receiving hospital for adults and a Trauma Unit for children. It is one of the largest in the UK seeing more than 139,000 new attenders per annum. It serves the whole of the Hull and East Riding catchment area as well as parts of the North Sea.

The department has excellent facilities including:-

  • PEM training centre
  • A newly built, dedicated Paediatric ED with two resuscitation rooms, glass fronted cubicles, 7 consulting rooms and a separate waiting area.
  • A ten bay resus with individual glass fronted bays, identically equipped and same handed with new equipment throughout.
  • A large open plan majors area with 24 glass fronted bays and five monitored rooms.
  • An in-department spiral CT scanner to facilitate rapid diagnosis of a range of conditions, with excellent time to CT (habitually the best in TARN)
  • Newly opening streaming care model for walk-in patients
  • Nurse led treatment protocols in the Paediatric ED

The ED in Hull has seen a great deal of investment and support in the last few years. Our nurse staffing is in line with NICE recommendations, there is a vibrant quality improvement programme and departmental morale is really good. Our CQC rating is good, we have improved metrics in training reports, patients surveys, complaints and incidents. It would be a great time to join us. Besides all this, the job planning process encompasses recent recommendations from RCEM and locally agreed shift patterns, self-rostering and annualised rota, favouring sustainability in career and a better work-life balance.

The successful candidate must hold a valid registration with the GMC, be on the GMC Specialist Register (or proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview).
