Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
The Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust provides a comprehensive range of services from two hospital sites. Acute Surgery is based at Hull Royal Infirmary in Hull and elective colorectal and upper GI surgery is based at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham.
We are a University Teaching Hospital with over 1200 beds serving a local population of approximately 600,000 with an extended catchment area of 1.2 million people and an annual budget of £500 million. The Trust forms part of the Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and employs around 7000 staff. We are committed to the provision and development of high quality services and doctors for the benefit of patients and our Hull Institute of Learning and Simulation delivers nationally accredited courses
The Trust provides a variety of additional tertiary surgical services including vascular, cardiothoracics and neurosurgery and is both a Major Cancer Centre and one of Yorkshire’s 3 Major Trauma Centres.
The wealth of surgical exposure for a surgical trainee is arguably unrivalled in Yorkshire. In addition to elective duties, the cross-cover and acute component of this post will expose Trust Core Surgical Trainees to opportunities in caring for patients with colorectal and oesophago-gastric malignancy, anti-reflux, pancreatic and bariatric surgery. Castle Hill is an established advanced laparoscopic centre with Da Vinci Robot facilities. Doctors will obtain experience in a range of emergency abdominal presentations as well as blunt and penetrating trauma management.
The Region of Hull and East Yorkshire
Both hospitals are approximately 1 hour drive from York and Leeds. The East Riding of Yorkshire is a very popular place to live for doctors, particularly the market town of Beverley and the West Hull villages of Swanland and Cottingham. Residents can enjoy the local beauty of the Yorkshire Wolds and easily reach the East Coastal resorts up into North Yorkshire and the stunning North Yorkshire Moors National Park. As UK City of Culture 2017 and a thriving University City, Hull benefits from excellent shopping and leisure facilities, concert halls, theatres and the largest aquarium (The Deep) in Europe.
Hull has excellent road and rail links with the rest of Britain (including a direct line to London Kings Cross in 2.5 hours), as well as easily accessible ferry links to Europe. The cost of living is considerably lower than elsewhere in the country making it an excellent place to achieve a far better work/life balance.
Please note that shortlisting will be taking place shortly after the closing date. For guarantees of interview please submit your application at the earliest opportunity. Shortlisted candidates will require NHS experience through formal observership or previous employment and candidates will need to hold GMC registration.
