Locum Consultant in General Anaesthesia for 6 months extendable to a year.

This post is advertised to support the anaesthetic department at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The anaesthetic department provides services across two hospital sites, Hull Royal Infirmary (HRI) and Castle Hill Hospital (CHH). All paediatric and neonatal services are based on the Hull Royal Infirmary site as are all obstetric services. There are 68 consultants within the department who provide in excess of 30,000 anaesthetics per year to a vast range of surgical specialties and many other clinical areas. The post has been developed to support expansion in surgical workload within the Trust.

Main duties of the job

A standard full time Job Plan will contain 11 programmed activities.(PAs)

10 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) Pas over 4 week days.

1 SPA will be allocated towards CPD.

Any extra programmed activities will be agreed at the job planning process with the Clinical Manager

Person specification


Essential criteria
  • Registered Practitioner who possesses FRCA (or equivalent).
  • Eligible to be on the Specialist Register or on the Specialist Register
Desirable criteria
  • MD, PhD or M Med Sci
  • Further qualification in medical education

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of training and clinical experience and competence in all anaesthetic techniques required for this post
  • Worked in the UK for at least 12 months as an anaesthetist
  • 7 years Anaesthesia experience
  • ALS Provider
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Paediatric Anaesthesia
  • PALS provider
  • ATLS provider

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of current issues in the NHS, and of the responsibilities of a NHS consultant.
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at recognised management courses.

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in training and teaching postgraduate and doctors and medical students in small and large groups.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
  • Trained in assessment of junior doctors

Research Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to carry out medical research.
  • Ability to present the findings of their research at a relevant scientific meeting.
Desirable criteria
  • A commitment to continuing research
  • Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.

Personal Attributes

Essential criteria
  • Well organised and skilled in good time management
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team
