Applications are invited for a Consultant Physician post in Acute Medicine in the Medicine Health Group. This appointment will complement 9 full-time Acute Physicians currently in post. The Acute Physician will have fixed sessional commitments on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and the Ambulatory Care Unit(ACU) and provide real-time assessment and management of patients admitted to these units. There are 10 other Consultant Physicians drawn from specialties within the Medicine Health Group who provide sessional presence on a rolling rota, covering the units from 8am till 10pm. In addition, the AMU is supported by 22 WTE consultant physicians who participate in the general medicine take and conduct daily post-take ward rounds. Specialties also provide daily in-reach into the AMU in order to ensure timely placement of patients to their appropriate bed base.

The Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is in the process of implementing a comprehensive reconfiguration of services for unscheduled medical admissions with an emphasis on reducing inappropriate admissions to in-patient care and earlier, supported hospital discharge. The new consultant will support the existing services and provide clinical leadership to the unit as well as develop the new model of care for these patients.

The service is supported by 2 acute medicine specialist trainee ST3-6, 14 trainees drawn from FT2/CT1/ST2 and 2 FY1 trainees on any shift. The department also has strong links with the Emergency Department and it is anticipated that there will be joint clinical input and shared care to patients. There is an opportunity to teach at the Hull York Medical School in years 1, 2 and 5. The department links with academic medicine and biological sciences at the Universities of Hull and York.

We serve a population of approximately 650,000 and some specialist services are aimed at extended catchment areas of 1.2 million people. We have an annual budget of around 440 million pounds and employ over 8,000 staff. We are committed to a continuing development of the service to the benefit of patients and to provide a comprehensive service of the highest possible quality.

The Trust is a teaching partner of Hull York Medical School, and has academic links with the Universities of Hull and York. There is annual intake of around 130 students.
