The radiotherapy department opened in August 2008 in the new £56M state of the art Queen's Centre serving 1.2million people in Hull and the surrounding region. This is a UK Centre of Excellence for the treatment and care of patients with cancer and the Radiotherapy Department plans to continue to develop its international reputation built on forward thinking and innovation.
Castle Hill Hospital site is based in a rural location in the East Riding of Yorkshire, overlooking fields and hills and is next to historic Beverley. The centre focuses on the patient and every aspect of their care, support and management. The department has 6 multi energy, multimodality Varian Linear accelerators with cutting edge technology, including onboard cone beam CT and respiratory gating.
This is an excellent opportunity for you to gain experience at a Band 5 level at the Queen's Centre, Castle Hill Hospital with six Varian linacs delivering VMAT, 4DCT, DIBH and SABR for primary Lung cancer. We are currently replacing one of our older machines with a Halcyon Linac which will be the first in the North of England. In addition the department has 2 wide bore CT scanners dedicated to treatment planning and staffed by therapy radiographers. Our centre also has a brachytherapy suite which is attached to theatres, diagnostic CT and MRI. Therapy radiographers also attend PET CT scanner sessions on the Castle Hill site.
We currently deliver high dose rate brachytherapy with Flexitron for gynaecological patients however plans are in place to expand this service in the future. We are also the second department in the UK and fifth worldwide to have implemented Contact brachytherapy using 50KV photons for early stage rectal cancer.
We are a highly motivated team and actively encourage all staff to engage in departmental developments, for example improving patient education with PEARL. We support radiographers in their interests to further their radiotherapy knowledge and experience this is achieved with protected CPD time.
